J.D. Power Ranks Kia Best For 2016 Initial Quality Study

Kia Motors is the first non-premium brand to top J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study (IQS) in 27 years. Out of all 33 auto manufacturers in the U.S., Kia was the highest scoring nameplate in the 2016 study. In the current IQS study, Kia outranked Porsche, BMW, Lexus and other premium brands, making auto industry history.

Several Kia models earned the highest marks for quality. New Kia Sportage and Soul models were ranked first in their respective segments while the Rio, Forte and Sorento all placed within the top three of their respective categories.

J.D. Power has been conducting the IQS study for 30 years to examine problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. A quality score is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) with the lowest scores representing the highest quality. Top ranking results of initial quality in this year’s study are as follows:

  • Kia Ranked – 83 PP100
  • Porsche Ranked – 84 PP100
  • Hyundai Ranked – 92 PP100
  • Toyota Ranked – 93 PP100
  • BMW Ranked – 94 PP100

As one of the most comprehensive quality studies in the auto industry, the J.D. Power IQS study is effective in assessing experience-based public opinion about new vehicles. The study measures model-level performance by comparing individual vehicle models to similar models in each segment. Study participants are asked to report their experiences with 233 potential vehicle problems in the following categories:

  • Exterior
  • Seats
  • Driving Experience
  • Engine/Transmission
  • Features/Controls/Displays
  • Interior
  • Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning
  • Audio/Communication/Entertainment/Navigation

Annual IQS study results are most beneficial in providing consumers with an accurate list of new vehicles that provide the most problem-free experience. It also offers a survey of quality differences between import and domestic brand models as well as between new and older model designs. Auto manufactures use the J.D. Power Quality Study to better understand new vehicle owner demographics and how vehicle problems influence customer satisfaction.
